Film Fusion for Motion Picture Scanning for DI

Film Fusion allows the creation of optimized scanning EDLs and keycode lists. There are two typical scenarios when it comes to scanning for digital intermediaries: Scanning directly from the uncut rushes or scanning from sorted selected takes that have been extracted from the rushes and assembled into new rolls by a negative cutter.

1. Scanning directly from the uncut rushes

In this case the offline EDL still relates to the rushes timecode and Film Fusion can import the EDL and convert it to an Optimized Scanning EDL where each shot is sorted in roll order and position in the roll (i.e. "B" Mode). Any dissolves, wipes, speed changes and duplicate shots are calculated and the exact number of frames required are shown in the EDL (or scan list).

Film Fusion can also export scanner specific lists for various scanners such as Northlight, Imagica XE and Arriscan as well as other file formats such as XML and Excel (CSV).

In this scenario there is no need to have access to the original rushes telecine logs.

2. Scanning from sorted selected takes

In this method the offline EDL no longer relates to the new selected rolls as selected takes have been cut from the rushes and re-assembled into new rolls with new timecode appointed. The original rushes telecine logs (or negative cutters logs) and the logs of the new rolls will be needed to create a scanning list or scanning EDL in this scenario. The logs can be made in Film Fusion or imported from Flex, ALE or OSC/R files.

A cut list will be created from the rushes using the offline EDL. Then a new cut list will be created using the logs from the new rolls. This is done using keycode only as it is the only constant. From this new cut list either a scanning list or a scanning EDL can be created that relates directly to the sorted selected takes rolls.

Film Fusion can also export scanner specific lists for various scanners such as Northlight, Imagica XE and Arriscan as well as other file formats such as XML and Excel (CSV).

This method is preferred by most scanning facilities as it reduces the volume of footage by up to 70% - 80% and has all the shots in order of the final edit.
